What to consider when purchasing a Power Bank

If you are after the best power bank, then first up you need to understand that people have power banks for a variety of reasons.  Some people are just after a good power bank to back up their phone in the case of an emergency whereas others want the best quality power bank to charge multiple devices daily.

Before you purchase a new power bank, it is important to consider what you will use it for and how you want it to perform. Consider the following questions:

1. Capacity – what’s your usage?

Let’s get the technical stuff out of the way.  Capacity on power banks is measured by milli Ampere Hour or mAH.  Basically, the higher the mAH the more times the power bank will charge your devices without going being depleted of battery charge.

You will need to ensure that the power bank you purchase has enough capacity to charge the device/s you are wanting to charge.  For example, if your smartphone has a 1500mAH battery, you need to ensure your charger has a capacity of at least 1500mAH or ideally more.  If your power bank has capacity of less than 1500mAH it will still charge your phone but only partially.

If you want to charge multiple devices on a daily basis than it is recommended that you look for a high capacity power bank, whereas if you are just looking for an iPhone power bank than the smallest power bank like a mini will do the trick.

The other thing to consider is whether having a smart power bank is important to you.  Smart power banks basically have technology built inside them which enables them to recognize your device and automatically adjusts the output to match the device therefore resulting in a faster charging.  This may be an important factor if you are looking for a fast charging power bank.

2. Connectors

These days the best battery bank will use a standard USB cable to connect to and charge your device.  However, some use their own specific cables which means if you lose it you’re in trouble.  Just ensure that whatever your device is you can connect it up appropriately to your power bank.  For example, make sure it’s not solely compatible with apple products if you have a Samsung phone.

All the power banks I recommend below can be connected using the USB cables it comes with or your devices normal charging cables.

3. Number of Devices to charge

It’s vital that you consider how many devices you need your power bank to charge at the same time.  If it’s just a back for your iPhone than you will only need a power bank with a single USB port, whereas if you need it to charge your laptop, iPhone and iPad after a full day of work or travelling then you will a power bank with multiple USB ports.

4. Quality

There are some great brands making some top-rated power banks.  In my view one of the best power bank brand is RAVPower, followed closely by Jackery and of course there are plenty more.  These good power bank brands make affordable power banks whatever your needs and so there is absolutely no need to buy from a cheap no name brand.

5. Price

Once you have the above points figured out this will generally determine how much you need to spend on your power bank.  However, if price is the most important factor to you, then you may need to consider a power bank with lower performance meaning you will need to be charging it more often.

Best Buy Power Bank – Power Bank Review

After considering the above points you should now have a good idea as to what is the best power pack for your specific needs.  Let’s take a closer look at some of the top rated power banks currently on the market.

1. RAVPower Ace 22,000mAH External Battery Pack

As I mentioned before, RAVPower is best power bank brand.  They are a reputable brand when it comes to the best power banks and the RAVPower portable charger 22000mAH is no exception.  This is the best power bank if you have multiple devices.

If you travel regularly with more than one device, work in various locations or have a family who each have their own device, then I highly recommend getting yourself this RAVPower portable charger.  This is a fast charging power bank, with 3 fast charging USB outputs, which are significantly faster than your average phone charger.  This is possibly the best fast charging power bank currently on the market.

This RAVPower power bank is a smart power bank meaning it recognizes your various devices and automatically adjust the output to match the device therefore resulting in faster charging.  However, with experts suggesting this RAVPower external battery can charge an iPhone 6 around 8 times before going flat, you won’t be needing to charge it too often.

A charger this size takes quite some time to recharge itself and at around 10 – 11 hours you will need to have plenty of time to recharging it before being good to go again.  Like most quality power banks on the market, with the RAVpower portable external battery charger you can simultaneously charge it whilst it is charging your various devices.

This power bank is ideal for all device types including smart phones, tablets and is a great power bank for laptop too.

This power bank comes with 2 USB cables (yes not 3 to match the outlets) and its own carry bag.  It’s certainly isn’t light or compact, weighing in at just under 500 grams, so you won’t be carrying it around in your pocket.

Like most power banks it has LED lighting so you can gauge the battery levels.

RAVPower power banks have a fantastic reputation, particularly the ones in the RAVPower ace series.  This is my choice for the top power bank currently on the market.  It is a best seller and very affordable given its capabilities.

Specifications and features:

  • USB Ports: 3
  • Recharging Time: 12 to 13 hours
  • Product Size: 6.5 x 0.94 x 2.76 inches
  • Product Weight: 14.4 ounces
  • Number of iPhone 6 or 7 charges: 8
  • Number of iPad Air charges: 1.5
  • Capacity: 22,000mAH
  • Comes with 2 USB charging cables, carry pouch and user guide

2. RAVPower Ace 12,000mAH External Battery Pack

If you don’t need the performance of the RAVPower Ace 22,000 mAH but a mini power bank just isn’t going to cut it, then the RAVPower 12,000mAH Power Bank is an ideal choice.  This RAVPower external battery pack is a perfect size to be a great choice if you are after the best portable power pack whilst still wanting that extra back up.  Like the RAVPower 22,000mAH discussed above, this mini power bank is also from the RAVPower Ace Series.

This RAVPower portable charger will easily charge your smart phone around 4 times without requiring charging itself.  It also does a great job of charging up your iPad as well.  Although it should be noted that the experts don’t recommend charging both your smart and iPad at the same time as this will drastically decrease its performance.  If this is a requirement for you, then you better look at purchasing a high capacity power bank.

Whilst this power bank is nice and small in terms of dimensions, it does tend to be a little on the heavy side weighing in at 11.7 ounces.

Like all RAVPower Ace’s this power bank has built in technology making it a smart power bank, adjusting its output to match the plugged-in device for quicker charging times.  There are also LED lights for reading battery levels.

This RAVPower power bank is ideal for users wanting a longer lasting back up for a phone power bank as well as the odd charge for an iPad or tablet.

Specifications and features:

  • USB Ports: 2
  • Recharging Time: 6 hours
  • Product Size: 5.12 x .094 x 2.20 inches
  • Product Weight: 11.7 ounces
  • Number of iPhone 6 or 7 charges: 4
  • Number of iPad Air charges: 1
  • Capacity: 12,000mAH
  • Comes with 2 USB charging cables, travel pouch and user guide

3. Poweradd 2nd Generation Pilot 2GS 10,000mAH Power Bank

If you want something a little cheaper than the RAVPower Ace 12,000mAH, then another good option is the Poweradd 2nd Generation Pilot 2GS 10,000mAH power bank.  It’s a great option if you are a low cost power bank.

It has similar features to the RAVPower Ace 123,000mAH, including 2 US ports and it will charge your iPhone approximately 4 times before requiring to be recharged itself.  The Poweradd has a slightly shorter recharge time of 5 hours compared to the RAVPower’s  6 hours which is great if you are just after the fastest power bank.

Like the RAVPower the Poweradd is also a smart power bank recognizing your device and automatically adjusting its output to match the plugged-in device for quicker charging times.  There are also LED lights for reading battery levels.

Some other advantages over the RAVPower is that It is slightly smaller in both dimensions and weight making it more portable.  The Poweradd is also slightly cheaper than the RAVPower making it a great choice if you are just after the cheapest power bank in this range.

Where it lacks features compared to the RAVPower is it only comes with 1 US cable (although assumingly you have plenty of these at home, so shouldn’t really pose too much of an issue) and coming in at 2000mAH less capacity means it is not suitable for those wishing to charge an iPad in full although you will be able to partially charge it up.

Specifications and features:

  • USB Ports: 2
  • Recharging Time: 5 hours
  • Product Size: 5.4 x 2.9 x .5 inches
  • Product Weight: 8.8 ounces
  • Number of iPhone 6 or 7 charges: 4
  • Number of iPad Air charges:
  • Capacity: 10,000mAH
  • Comes with 1 USB cable and user guide

4. Jackery Bar 6000mAH Compact Portable Battery Charger

Jackery is another good power bank brands, they have a great reputation and are a great alternative to RAVPower if you are looking for the best portable power bank.  Like RAVPower there are a variety of sizes with varying capacity in Jackery power banks.

If you are looking for the best portable iPhone charger or any smart phone for that matter, then check out the Jackery Bar Pocket-Sized battery charger.  This little Jackery portable charger is a best seller among people just wanting to charge their smart phones when on the go.

It a great compact power bank and arguably the best slim power bank on the market.  It’s nice and light and will easily fit into your pocket or purse when you’re out and about.

Those looking for some colour in their portable mobile charger will love the Jackery mini portable charger as it comes in a variety of colours including black, orange or silver.

Given this Jackery phone charger its designed simply to be a power bank for phones, it only has a single USB port.  It will charge your phone around 2 times as well as partially charge your tablet being requiring charging itself.  The Jackery Bar takes around 6 to 7 hours to fully charge.

This power bank mobile charger comes with LED battery indicator lights and can also charge your device whilst it is being charged itself.

The Jackery Bar is excellent value for a compact power bank and for anyone after the best budget power bank.

Specifications and features:

  • USB Ports: 1
  • Recharging Time: 7 hours
  • Product Size: 3.8 x 1.8 x 0.9 inches
  • Product Weight: 5.4 ounces
  • Number of iPhone 6 or 7 charges: 2
  • Number of iPad Air charges: 0.6
  • Capacity: 6000mAH

5. RAVPower Luster Mini 3350mAH Portable Charger

Yet another great RAVpower power bank, the Luster Mini is the best slim power bank and one of the smallest on the market but don’t let the size of this mini power bank concern you, as for its size it has fantastic performance.

If all you want is the best portable phone charger, then you will love the Luster Mini.  This mini power bank will charge your smart phone in full once perhaps twice if you are lucky.  Whilst not designed to charge an iPad or tablet, you could partially charge them with a fully charged Luster Mini.

This is an ideal cell phone power bank to keep with your smart phone on a day to day basis.  Pop it on charge each night and in around 2- 3 hours it will be fully charged ready to back you up the following day.

The Luster Mini is the ultimate in terms of portability.  At 4 inches, long and only 2.6 ounces you can easily carry it in your pocket or purse without it weighing you down.  You could easily have this plugged into your smart phone in your pocket as needed.

It also comes in funky colours like black, blue, pink and gold as well as having LED lights for reading battery levels.  Of course, like all RAVPower power banks, it is a smart power bank with built in technology to recognize your device and automatically adjusts its output for quicker charging times.

This mini power bank is recommended for day use only.  It will not remain charged for more than a day or so and therefore is not recommended for travelling when you won’t be able to charge it up daily.

Specifications and features:

  • USB Ports: 1
  • Recharging Time: 2 – 3 hours.
  • Product Size: 4 x .09 x 0.9 inches
  • Product Weight: 2.6 ounces
  • Number of iPhone charges: 1
  • Number of iPad Air charges: .25
  • Capacity: 3350mAH
  • Comes with 1 USB charging cable and user guide

Great comparison of the power banks. I really like the look of the Rav Power Luster. I prefer my power banks to be small and light. I usually only use them in case my phone dies out. The Rav Power looks like it is really compact.

I don’t have a power bank charger yet and have been meaning to get one. I like the RAVpower one as it seems to be the kind I’m looking for. Something to charge my iphone and the odd time my ipad and the price is reasonable too. Good write up of products.

Thank you Kathryn. For me a power bank is one of the must-have items for every trip. I have been to quite a few places where I couldn’t charge my phone and I have been a few times in the situation that I wanted to take a photo or video but my battery was empty. That won’t happen if you travel with a power bank 🙂

I really liked this piece. As a person who doesn’t research technology and who usually doesn’t understand it, this wasn’t very easy to understand. I’m certainly walking away learning a little bit about something pretty important.

I have the 10000mAh one but I really need to invest in the 22000 mAh. Power banks are absolute lifesavers when you are in a crisis but I almost usually forget mine while leaving the house haha!

    • Tim Kroeger September 30, 2017 at 7:16 am - Reply

The advantage of the 22000mAh power bank is that you can leave it in your bag for a couple of days. No need to charge it everyday. This way you hopefully won’t forget it anymore 🙂

I purchased a cheapish 15600mAh power bank on Amazon for my phone a year or so back. It was well worth the $26 spent. It has saved me time and time again while traveling or out and about running errands. I didn’t even consider the possibility of having one for my laptop until now. Thanks for this.
